saint elsewhere

a great photographer left us last week. mpozi tolbert. he documented via photo the likes of the roots and slum village. for some of his work, check out okayplayer.com. It was truly dope. i was inspired to take new pictures. well kinda. i decided to take pictures of pictures. i was going to reframe them and hopefully give them new meaning. i am still working on this project, but since i love you all, i will share them today.

These were initally staff pictures for a school paper in college. I was brought in to do headshots of all the members, and these were the headshots that were the best. i feel like it looks like an old page of a yearbook now.. im still tryna figure out what overexposing the picture has done.

initally, chanel was sitting on my lap, hugging me. i took my ug mug out that picture to focus on her smile. i wanted a picture that looked like it was painted at first glance. but this was no photoshop "paint" feature. i oversaturated the picture, made it softer, and decreased the brightness for highlights. check out all the cool lines. i feel this picture cd be blown up and framed...if chanel is that vain. lol jk

circa 2002. i walked up to a new student and asked her if i could take pictures of her. rather bold, i know. and in hindsight, im kinda surprised she was not weirded out by my request. but, she wasn't. i took 50 plus pictures of this beautiful lady. one of the most popular was this one. im not sure who suggested to have the belly button exposed, but i think it was a great addition.

this picture of me of my nephew was done in the bathroom. i was trying to teach him how to take pictures with a slr camera. gotta start them early. in fact, this picture was taken by him. i gave the picture a new border by including the wall in the picture. if only i can get my nephew to behave as well as he takes pictures.

circa 2003. i met a track star and took this picture post-practice. there are two versions of this reworking. i decided to go with this one because this one had emotion to me. its a strong side profile. it's also such an honest picture.

imma sleep on these.
maybe ill do more if i like it next week.

thanks for reading.

Keep at the photography dude.

They have this thin, underwater feel to 'em.
